Possible Litter Outcomes From Normal 66% Possible Double Hets

I started to create a page describing basic Herp Genetics, but I found an excellent set of webpages created by New England Reptile Distributors that give a terrific presentation and background on Herp Genetics! There's no reason to reinvent the wheel when they have done such a masterful job, so if you need to learn the basics of Herp Genetics, please visit NERD's Intro to Reptile Genetics.

I have listed below the potential breeding outcomes of litters from the snakes that I have or that I have available for sale. Please remember that these outcomes are according to the Punnett Square, and actual outcomes may (and probably will) differ, especially if the litter is small! Click the Plus sign next to each breeding matchup to see the results. If needed, a list of genetic terms can be found here. If you have a litter from a Normal 66% Possible Double Het, and you want to see what genes the parents could possess, take a look at the Success! section at the bottom of this page. You can also use the Success! section to determine what it will take to produce a certain type of morph.

Key of Alleles:

A - Normal allele for melanin production
a - Recessive allele for albinism
N - Normal allele for erythrin production
n - recessive allele for anerytherism

Success!

If you have been lucky enough to have a successful litter using a Normal 66% Possible Double Het (or two), congratulations! Now comes the fun part - figuring out exactly what kind of genes they might possess. Here are a few things to remember:

Keep in mind that you need to have a rather large litter to truly identify the genes at work. For example, to create a Snow from a 66% Poss. Double Het x 66% Poss. Double Het breeding, you have a 1 in 16 chance of seeing a Snow in your litter (if both turn out to be DH's). So, if you only have a litter of 9 babies, but no snow, it doesn't necessarily mean that one or the other (or both) are not DH's. This just means that it might take another breeding, or two, or three to determine exactly what genes they possess. With 66% Possible Het breedings, the larger amount of babies, the greater sample, and the closer the results should be to the Punnett Square.

Of course the easiest way to prove out a 66% Possible Double Het is to breed it to a "visible" morph that definitely possesses the same genes. For example, by breeding a 66% Possible Double Het to a Snow you will be able to tell the genes that the 66% Possible Double Het possesses by looking at the makeup of the litter (assuming a relatively decent size litter). If there are Snows in the litter, then you know it is a definite DH. If there are Albinos and Anerys in the litter, but no Snows, it's still a definite DH, you just didn't get lucky this time around with producing a Snow (this is highly unlikely though, since you have a 1 in 4 chance of producing a Snow with this breeding). If there are only Albinos and Normals in the litter, then the Possible DH is only Het for Albino. If there are only Anerys and Normals in the litter, then the Possible DH is only Het for Anery. Finally, if all you see is Normals in the litter (again, this is assuming a decent size litter), then unfortunately the Possible DH is only a Normal (but all of the babies are 100% definite DH for Snow).

I have made the summary below to help you figure out exactly what genes you might be dealing with by looking at a litter of babies from a Possible DH (or two), assuming it was a decent size litter. You can also use this summary to determine what breedings you would need to try to produce a desired morph. Just match the # listed with the type of breeding that you did.

You have a Snow in your litter - Congratulations you have a definite Double Het Snow! These potential breeding outcomes listed above have Snows in the litter: #1, #11, #19, and #25.

You have Albinos AND Anerys in your litter, but no Snows - Congratulations you have a definite Double Het Snow, you just didn't get lucky this time, but hopefully next time! See above for outcomes with Snows in the litter.

You have Albinos and Normal looking babies in your litter - These potential breeding outcomes listed above have only Albinos and Normals in the litter: #2, #5, #12, #13, #14, #21, and #26.

You have Anerys and Normal looking babies in your litter - These potential breeding outcomes listed above have only Anerys and Normals in the litter: #3, #8, #15, #20, and #27.

You have only Normal looking babies in your litter - These potential breeding outcomes listed above have only Normal looking babies in the litter: #4, #6, #7, #9, #10, #16, #17, #18, #22, #23, #24, and #28.
